THE WISDOM OF THE OLD TESTAMENT

The Wisdom of the Old Testament In Western culture there are two kinds of wisdom intertwined. One is the wisdom of the Greeks, based on the knowledge of oneself as Man, and centering on the name of Socrates. The other is the wisdom of the Jews, based on the fear of God as the beginning of wisdom. This is to be found in all the writings of the Old Testament, in the books of Moses and the prophets, but especially in the sapiential writings, centering on the name of Solomon. In these writings, one even finds the personification of Wisdom, or Sophia (in Greek), now as a divine attribute, now as a lady, now even as a baby, delighting in the works of God. For Christians this is all fulfilled in the person of Jesus and in his mother Mary.
