Fortunately for him and his plays, Shakespeare was living in an age when women were still highly regarded, even as superior to men, owing to the medieval devotion to Our Lady.
Accordingly, his plays may be seen and studied from two points of view, one as what was then called a "preparative for marriage", covering all aspects of the relationship between Man and Woman, except family life, and the other concentrating on the tragic heroines, seeing that the heroines in the tragedies are so much more impressive than those in the comedies. Such are the two parts into which this book is divided.
