概要:
"Living with Hopkins". In a lifetime spent entirely within the reign of Queen Victoria, the Jesuit poet Gerard Manley Hopkins was practically unknown outside a small circle of friends, and most of his poems remained unpublished by the time of his death in 1889. He had to wait till 1918 before his collected poems were edited by his friend Robert Bridges (then poet laureate) and published by the Oxford University Press. Even so, it was not till after World War II and the third edition of his poems by W.H.Gardner in 1948, that his fame spread beyond the British Isles to America and all over the world. Now he is recognized as an outstanding English religious poet. In the present volume I have collected a number of my articles on various aspects of that poetry contributed to the annual bulletin of the Hopkins Society of Japan entitled "Hopkins Research" over the past 15 years, with emphasis on his uniqueness, his eccentricity, and his inspiration.
