The culture of the West is a phenomenon too complicated and too detailed to describe in a single book. Perhaps it may best be seen in terms of a journey through the traditional centres of culture proceeding as it were backwards from London in the West, by way of Paris, Rome and Athens, to Jerusalem in the East, or forwards from the lands of the Bible, through the lands of the Classics, and from the Mediterranean Sea to Europe, centred on Germany, France and England.
